Resumen:
Sumario:Abstract. Modern education systems aim at reaching all the population, but until very recently they accepted that not all children have capacity to access to higher education and that many of them would only finish a first stage, defined as compulsory. Today it is deemed as necessary and possible that all children attain higher competence levels, but achievement differences between social groups persist, giving more relevance to the question about the real possibility of the school system to reach those ambitious goals for every child, beyond social differences. This article reflects on school possibilities, looking at the results of recent research, in special from the Mexican experience.
