This thesis analyzes the process of transformation of the Unión Cívica (UC) that led to the foundation of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) in 1962. Its main objective is to determine whether that foundation represented the creation of a new party arising from the victory of reformist sectors, or rather the redefined continuity of an organization in crisis. From the perspective of political history, the study examines the tensions between conservatism and reformism within the UC and the emerging PDC, focusing on the ideological, organizational, and contextual influences that shaped the process. The central hypothesis argues that the formation of the PDC in 1962 did not constitute a complete rupture but was the result of an internal negotiation aimed at preserving the structure and historical leadership of the UC in the face of pressure from reformist sectors influenced by Christian humanism, the regional context of Christian Democracy, and the national political reality. The analysis covers the period 1938–1964, during which the doctrinal, political, and generational foundations of the new Uruguayan Christian Democracy were consolidated. The research draws on unpublished primary sources, including internal party documents, convention minutes, private correspondence, periodical publications (El Ciudadano, El Bien Público, Marcha, Tribuna Católica, Política, among others), and personal archives (Plá Rodríguez, Zubillaga). These materials are complemented by historiographical and theoretical literature on political parties and Christian social thought. The findings show that the 1962 change of name was more a containment strategy than a refoundation: the UC gave way to the PDC with some changes in its composition, although without substantive modifications in its organizational structure or political culture. Between 1962 and 1964, the conflicts over leadership, resistance to renewal, and disputes regarding doctrinal definition reflected a transitional stage marked by tensions between continuity and change. In this process, the institutional and doctrinal continuities of the Unión Cívica sought to persist within the new party but were ultimately overcome in 1964, when the PDC redefined its profile and consolidated itself as a distinct political force.
