Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a tool used in intensive care that aims to sustain the patient's breathing until he or she can return to spontaneous ventilation. The benefits that MV can have in critically ill patients are clear, however it is also known that MV is not harmless and there is direct ventilator associated lung damage (VILI), among other complications. One of the variables with which it is possible to assess whether there is more or less lung damage is mechanical power (MP). General objective: Estimate the value of the mechanical power generated by the assistance Invasive mechanical ventilation in a sample of critically ill patients in an ICU unit. Type of study: Prospective descriptive observational study. Reference population: Patients who were admitted to the multipurpose CTI area of the Hospital de Clínicas, subject to invasive mechanical ventilation and who met the inclusion criteria, in the period from July to October 2023. Methodology: The s tudy var iables to characterize the sample and to determine the APACHE score were obtained by reviewing the clinical history, and the values of the parameters associated with the ventilator were derived from the trends collected of each patient's respirator. Excel was used as a database, and SPSS as software. Results and conclusions: From a total of 15 patients, the median mechanical power was obtained, resulting in 16 J/min. It is not possible to obtain a conclusion regarding the result obtained for the PM value (16 J/min), that this is significantly higher than the threshold value theoretically established (12 J/min). The relationship between PM and the presence of lung pathology is not statistically significant. There is no correlation between the APACHE severity score and the transmitted PM value.
