Las políticas ejecutadas en relación con los indígenas charrúas durante el primer gobierno republicano del Uruguay (1830-1834) se apropian de las estrategias, los discursos y los mecanismos llevados a cabo durante el final del período colonial sobre los llamados indígenas infieles (1776-1811), y serán instrumentalizados para organizar las narrativas sobre los pueblos indígenas del territorio. Esos relatos comienzan a ser cuestionados e interpelados en sus bases con el retorno de la democracia en 1985. En este artículo se analizan los actos de Estado que objetivan el exterminio indígena; los usos y las apropiaciones sobre los hechos y su encuadramiento discursivo posterior en los relatos de la identidad nacional, y el escenario de memorias en disputa producido en torno a las prácticas y representaciones del Estado sobre los indígenas, con el surgimiento de organizaciones indígenas e indigenistas en la actualidad.

The policies implemented concerning the Charrúa indigenous people during the first republican government of Uruguay (1830-1834), appropriated the mechanisms, discourses and practices carried out during the end of the colonial period on the so-called infieles indigenous (1776-1811), and would be the basis for organising the discourses on national identity and the indigenous peoples of the territory. These narratives began to be questioned and challenged at their core with de return of democracy in 1985. Thisarticle analyses the acts of state that objectify indigenous extermination; the interpretations and appropriations made about the event and their subsequent discursive framing in the narratives of national identity; and the contested memory landscape produced around the practices and representations of the State concerning the indigenous people, with the emergence of indigenous and indigenist organizations in the present.
