A través de este Trabajo Final de Grado (TFG) se pretende explorar los posibles significados de la espiritualidad y las terapias complementarias en el contexto de la enfermedad oncológica, así como su valor para los individuos al enfrentar el diagnóstico y los tratamientos relacionados con el cáncer. El trabajo comienza con una introducción a la temática, comenzando con la definición del cáncer y la incorporación del paradigma de la Psiconeuroinmunoendocrinología (PNIE) para comprender la interrelación mente, cuerpo y espíritu en la enfermedad. Se explora el significado de la espiritualidad, la religión y la religiosidad, situándose en el contexto histórico de la medicina y la concepción de enfermedad y cura, para poder introducir al uso de las terapias complementarias como una práctica que es llevada a cabo desde la antigüedad. Se considera la definición de terapias complementarias y alternativas, la distinción entre ellas, y la clasificación brindada por el Centro Nacional de Medicina Complementaria y Alternativa (NCCAM) para comprender la diversidad de enfoques. Para finalizar, tomando en consideración diversas investigaciones, el trabajo aborda la relación entre espiritualidad y terapias complementarias, explorando su importancia y el efecto que tiene en los pacientes oncológicos. De esta manera, este trabajo intentará dar a entender de qué forma la espiritualidad y las terapias complementarias ofrecen significados profundos en la forma de tratar y enfrentar la enfermedad oncológica ante el miedo a la muerte que provoca el diagnóstico y los consiguientes tratamientos.

Through this Final Degree Project (TFG), the aim is to explore the possible meanings of spirituality and complementary therapies in the context of oncological illness, as well as their value for individuals facing the diagnosis and cancer-related treatments. The work begins with an introduction to the topic, starting with the definition of cancer and the incorporation of the Psychoneuroimmunoendocrinology (PNIE) paradigm to understand the interrelation of mind, body, and spirit in illness. The meaning of spirituality, religion, and religiosity is explored, situating them in the historical context of medicine and the conception of illness and cure, in order to introduce the use of complementary therapies as a practice carried out since ancient times. The definition of complementary and alternative therapies is considered, distinguishing between them, and the classification provided by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is discussed to understand the diversity of approaches. Taking into account various research studies, the paper addresses the relationship between spirituality and complementary therapies, exploring their importance and the impact they have on oncology patients. In general terms, this work will attempt to convey how spirituality and complementary therapies offer profound meanings in the way oncological illness is treated and faced, in the face of the fear of death that the diagnosis and subsequent treatments provoke.
