Introduction: Although alcohol is the most frequently consumed drug in Uruguay, there is limited information about its effects while breastfeeding. Objective: A descriptive study was conducted with the objective of knowing the prevalence of alcohol consumption by breastfeeding mothers, its impact on the growth, development and duration of breastfeeding in children under one year of age. Maternal beliefs about alcohol intake during breastfeeding were also investigated. Methodology: 103 mothers and their children participated in this study. The variables to be evaluated were obtained through a survey, the analysis of anthropometric data from the Pediatric Card and the evaluation of development based on the National Guide for Monitoring the Development of Boys and Girls Under 5 Years of Age. Conclusions: A prevalence of 15.5% of alcohol consumption was reported, with 93% being social consumers. There were no significant differences between average maternal age, educational level and average breastfeeding time between the consumer and non-consumer groups. With regard to the effects of the growth of the children of consuming mothers, it was observed that they presented a significant decrease compared to abstaining mothers. On the other hand, no relationship was found between alcohol consumption and development disruptions on children in the sample. 62.5% of the women who reported alcohol intake presented adequate beliefs on the subject, with no significant differences being found between both groups of mothers.
