En diciembre de 1983 llegaban a Uruguay 154 hijos de uruguayos exiliados. Este hecho inédito fue ideado y organizado por un grupo de uruguayos residentes en España y Uruguay y por españoles integrantes de organizaciones defensoras de los DDHH y del Gobierno español.Los uruguayos enviaron a sus hijos como avanzada de un próximo y certero desexilio. Los niños viajaban a un país en el cual sus padres corrían riesgo de ser apresados o secuestrados. Muchos de ellos eran hijos de presos políticos, desaparecidos o asesinados. Algunos incluso habían sufrido ellos mismos el secuestro o encarcelamiento junto a sus mayores, además de lo que implica en sí mismo el destierro en un niño. Para organizar este viaje trabajaron juntos los tres grupos que luego habrían de convivir en el país: exilio, inxilio y presospolíticos. Es de destacar que la organización creada en Uruguay para ‘el viaje de los niños’-la Comisión por el Reencuentro de los Uruguayos (CRU)-, logró ampliar sus objetivos primarios y a partir de 1985 amparó la salida de los presos políticos y la llegada de uruguayos a un país devastado por una crisis sin precedentes.Para esta investigación se ha relevado la prensa uruguaya e internacional; archivos, personales, estatales y de las organizaciones participantes y testimonios de los protagonistas.

In December 1983, 154 children of exiled Uruguayans arrived to their country. That rather unusual journey was planed and organized by Uruguayans who were living in Spain, by another group who were in Uruguay, and by members of human rights organizations. Parents sent their children as an outpost of their close and unfailing return. The young travelers flied to a country in which their parents were at risk of being arrested or abducted. Many of them were children of disappeared persons, political prisoners and murdered. Likewise, some of themselves had suffered the kidnapping or imprisonment along with their elders, besides the negative experience involving the banishment for a child.The three groups injured by the dictatorial regime -exiles, “in-xiles” and prisoners-which were hoping to live together in their country again, worked in concert for this trip. It is noteworthy that the organization created in Uruguay for "the voyage of the children" -the Commission for the Reunion of the Uruguayan (CRU)-, managed to expand its primary objectives since 1985, supported the liberating of the political prisoners and the arrival of Uruguayans to a country devastated by an unprecedented crisis. In order to carry out our research, we are consulting Uruguayan and international press, private and public files, documents of the participating organizations, and testimonies of the protagonists.
