Introduction: Overweight and obesity are an expanding epidemic worldwide. According to the WHO in 2016, there were more than 340 million children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 19 with overweight or obesity. Uruguay does not escape this trend, although updated data from random sampling of children is not available. Objective: To know the prevalence of overweight/obesity (Sp/o) and its association with physical activity, screen exposure and hours of sleep, in Uruguayan children between the ages of 5 and 10 who completed the third wave of the ENDIS survey in the year 2019. Method: Observational, cross-sectional study in a sample of 2400 children aged between 5 and 10 years. The outcome variable was Sp/o understood as those with a BMI greater than +1 SD. Epidemiological variables related to Sp/o were studied. Bivariate analysis was performed using the chi square test for qualitative variables and the t test for quantitative variables. A multiple logistic regression model was used to evaluate the relative risk of presenting Sp/o in relation to age, tercile, dining room attendance, hours of physical activity, hours of screen exposure and hours of sleep. Results: The prevalence of Sp/o in the population was 43%. A significant association was found between older age, higher economic income and non-attendance to a dining room. No association was found between hours of screen time, physical activity or hours of sleep. Conclusions: This study shows a high prevalence of overweight/obesity in the analyzed sample. At older age and better economic income, an increased risk of developing it was identified. Attending to the dining room behaves as a protective factor, which could be used as tool to improve the acquisition of healthy eating habits.
