The Uruguayan civic-military dictatorship (1973-1985) was a stage marked by State terrorism, the reproduction of different practices of violence, censorship, repression and systematic violations of human rights. Inquiring into the current discourses that portray traumatic historical events, the thesis problematizes how the Uruguayan fiction cinema of the present century represents, as a powerful means of communication, the recent past of its country, with the aim of discursive representation of institutional violence in the dictatorship in films made in the period 2007-2020. Four Uruguayan films about the dictatorship are studied: Polvo nuestro que estás en los cielos, Zanahoria, Migas de pan and La noche de 12 años, exploring them from three theoretical axes: the role of the State exerting institutional violence, the relationship between fiction and cinematographic representation of violence, and the role of cinema as a document of historical memory. Through the description, interpretation and explanation of the discourses (Fairclough, 1996), based on a socio-semiotic approach (Halliday, 1998), the four films are discursively analyzed as multimodal texts (Kress and Van Leeuwen, 2006) with different social configurations. and ideologies of meaning. The main findings of the investigation shows that Uruguayan cinema exhibits different strategies of representation of institutional violence in the dictatorship, approaching the topic through sensitive discursive work and an ethical commitment toward the historicities and subjectivities involved. Using various modes of meaning, Uruguayan cinema has a clear and concise narrative about the recent past and the transmission of memory that integrates the viewer from an affective identification perspective. Finally, Uruguayan cinematographic fiction, in its representation of institutional violence, is a discursive instance that opens a debate on issues that have not been fully addressed or settled in different spheres of public opinion.
