This monograph explores the understanding of internalizing problems during adolescence and emerging adulthood, with a particular focus on depression and anxiety, through a theoretical and critical review. It is based on the recognition that both stages represent periods of high emotional vulnerability and profound brain plasticity, making them privileged windows for prevention and early intervention in mental health. Drawing on a review of the scientific literature, the work questions the limitations of the traditional categorical model, which fragments the experience of distress into discrete diagnostic categories and hinders the identification of common psychological mechanisms. In contrast, it examines the transdiagnostic approach as an alternative explanatory framework, focusing on cognitive rumination as a cross-cutting process involved in the etiology, maintenance, and recurrence of internalizing psychopathology. Finally, the theoretical and clinical implications of this model are discussed, emphasizing the need for more integrative and developmentally sensitive perspectives that better account for the complexity of youth mental health.
