Against the Revolution: Social Order and Independence in the Provincia Oriental, 1820-1828
The article analyzes the stage that goes from the occupation of the Oriental Province by the Lusitanians in 1820 to the firmament of the Preliminary Convention of Peace of 1828, from the perspective of a group of political subjects who lived in the revolution as the supreme evil to avoid and which considered it order as a supreme good that should be preserved. Based on an extensive bibliographic review, the work identified as, in the period, lost space of the more radical counterrevolutionary proposals, at the same time that consolidated a porous and extended sense of common conservator in the interior of the oriental notables, in order to amoderate program of changes ―which could be realized under protection of various powers―, but fearful of the unintended effects of revolutions. The article is dependent on the reflection on the process of independence planted by the historian José Pedro Barran, while dialoguing with the renovation and success of studies in the counter-revolutionary sectors in Europe and Hispanic America.
