Hacia fines de la década del ochenta del siglo pasado las revoluciones cubana nicaragüense no solamente eran importantes referentes para los comunistas uruguayos,sino que además, producto de la crisis del “campo socialista”, su peso simbólico había crecido sensiblemente. Al mismo tiempo, ambos regímenes vivían desafíos que hacían tambalear su proyecto revolucionario y los obligaban a tomar importantes decisiones,las cuales no solamente impactaban a su interna, sino que además generaban ricos debates en el seno de la izquierda latinoamericana. La propuesta del presente artículo es analizar el papel que los comunistas uruguayos le asignaron a los procesos cubano y nicaragüense en las discusiones que se desarrollaban en el seno del PCU, en el marco de la más grave crisis de su historia. El trabajo pondrá especial énfasis en los debates que tenían como eje central la relación entre la democracia política y el socialismo a construir.

By the end of the eighties of the last century, the Cuban and Nicaraguan revolutions were not only important references for the Uruguayan communists but also, as a result of the crisis of the "socialist block", their symbolic weigh that grown considerably. At the same time, both regimes faced challenges that made their revolutionary project falter and forced them to make important decisions, which not only had an indoors impact but also generated rich debate within the Latin American left. The purpose of this article is to analyze the role that the Uruguayan Communists assigned to the Cuban and Nicaraguan processes in the discussions that took place within the PCU in the context of the most serious crisis of its history. The work will put special emphasis on the debates that had as central axis there lation between the political democracy and the socialism to be constructed.
