With the global demographic transition, Brazil stands out among the countries with the highest absolute number of elderly. Beyond the surface of this data, this article adopts the dialectical method, based on a materialist conception, in order to critically analyze this phenomenon. The objective is to examine the trajectory of Brazilian Social Work in the production of knowledge about aging and old age, highlighting its recent contributions to the field of Critical Social Gerontology, its differences from the hegemonic approach, as well as existing gaps and challenges for its dissemination among social workers. This is a theoretical study, based on documentary and bibliographic research, with a qualitative approach, carried out in the first half of 2025. It concludes that Critical Social Gerontology, articulated with the ethical-political project of Social Work, is essential for understanding inequalities in aging and for the development of public policies that confront conservatism and neoliberalism in professional practice.
