Since its origins, being and working as a sugarcane worker has been marked bydemands for access to land, occasionally achieved by the National Institute ofColonization (INC) cooperation and with employees and small producers help who havebecome themselves into settlers.In recent years, the INC has privileged collective forms of access to land. In this contexta cooperative made up of 35 employees who aspires to become settlers, all of themmembers of the Land Commission UTAA (Union of Sugar Workers of Artigas), wasrecently awarded with a fraction of land in the Pay Paso area (Bella Union- Uruguay),with the aim of producing sugar cane for subsequent sale to the ALUR plant (UruguayAlcohols SA).This article is based on my final degree for Bachelor of Social Anthropology, and refersto the processes generated around access to land issue by this group of workers. Based on an ethnographic approach to the subject, this is an approximation based on myextensive work in the field in direct contact with our partners and their daily lives.
