This research studies the function of humor—and its different expressions: jokes, comedy, parody, laughter— in psychoanalysis. Early on, Freud granted humor a significant place, both in theory and clinical practice. Based on his contributions, humor became established as a possible way to address suffering and a path to unconscious truth. In this thesis, we describe the various psychoanalytic theories of humor—the contributions of Freud, the analysts of the first generations, the English School, Ego Psychology, and the French School—and then compile and analyze humorous practices in psychoanalysis, primarily its clinical manifestations. We also study some theories and practices of humor in psychoanalysis in Uruguay. The systematization of diverse humorous practices in psychoanalysis allowed us to identify four functions of humor: illustrative, theoretical, clinical, and institutional. The exploration of the different theories and practices reveals the paradoxical place that humor has occupied in psychoanalysis.
