La obra pictórica de Eduardo Dionisio Carbajal (1831-1895) se enmarca dentro de la formación de ciudadanía a través de la imagen. El artista formado en Italia se destacó por ser el primer catedrático de Dibujo de la Universidad, el primer becario del Estado uruguayo para realizar estudios artísticos en Italia y el primer artista en realizar un retrato al óleo de Artigas. Su obra se ha injustamente comparado con la de Blanes, para establecer distancias en su virtuosismo, aunque se suele silenciar la contribución de Carbajal en la creación de una iconografía nacional. Sus galerías de presidentes, constituyentes de 1830 y Asambleístas de la Florida crearon un conjunto de hombres ilustres que coinciden temporalmente con la construcción del Panteón Nacional y las Biografías de Isidoro de María. Lamentablemente las galerías de Carbajal se encuentran hoy disgregadas, y han perdido la noción de conjunto, que solía fungir como cara de la Historia nacional y su identidad.

Eduardo Dionisio Carbajal (1831-1895) pictorial work can be considered part of citizenship formation trough image in the 19h century Americas. The artist has achieved the first position in Uruguayan history as the first Art Chair at the local University, first scholar to be sent on a government grant to study painting in Italy and the first to complete an oil portrait of the national hero (Artigas). His work has been unfairly treated and diminished in technical virtuosity compared to his colleague Blanes. Even his contribution to the building of a Uruguayan national iconography has been silenced. His galleries of presidents, creators of the first Constitution and pioneers of Independence, temporally coincide with the erection of the National Mausoleum of Uruguayan heroes and the Biographies of Illustrious Uruguayans written by Isidoro de María. Unfortunately his galleries have now been scattered in different museums, losing their original purpose: be the face of national history and its identity
