The history of Uruguay in the past century was rich in military events. After the Independence War, the ones against Brazil and Argentine succeded and culminated at the Guerra Grande and finaliy with the Triple Alliance Campaign against Paraguay. The author tells the history of military surgery in this turbulent century ponting out the outstanding figure of Spielman among Artigas surgeons and FermínFerreira in the Guerra Grande and Paraguay's War. A comparison is made between these River Plate's wars and tho·se that simultaneously took place in Europe and North America: Crimea, Prussian and Civil War.
La historia del Uruguay en el siglo pasado fue rica en episodios militares. Después de la lucha por la Independencia se sucedieron lasguerras con Brasil y Argentina, que culminaron en la Guerra Grande. Finalmente se realizó la Campaña .e la Triple Alianza contrael Paraguay. El autor relata la historia de la cirugía militar. en ese siglo turbulento destacando la figura descollante de Spielman entre los ciruja.no , de Artigas, y la de Fermín Ferreira en las Guerras Grande y ruel Paraguay. Señala el paralelo entre estas guerras rioplatensesy las·_ que se desarrollaron simultáneamente en Europa y Norteamérica: Crimea, Secesión y Prusianas.
