dc.description.en-US.fl_txt_mv Abstract. The present article aims to discuss the educational project of the Brazilian Catholic Church, between 1859 and 1919, and its main object of analysis is the installation of the Sisters of San Joseph of Chamberry School in the province of São Paulo – now São Paulo State. The settling of the catholic educational project shows the ambiguity of the São Paulo oligarchy which, in spite of its support to liberal and positivist ideals, did not hesitate in supporting the conservationist doctrine of the ultramontanist Catholicism. The Brazilian oligarchy, as a whole, in spite of planning the modernization of the production, such as, for example, the abolition of slavery, concerning family and society, feared the modernity of habits and, mostly, the modernity which could lead to the education and professionalization of women.
dc.description.pt-PT.fl_txt_mv Resumo.
