Sumario:Abstract. This article will address four key issues which contribute to placing the identity traits of educational research as the primary instrument of knowledge production in the field of educationalsciences. The questions are: 1) educational research and its specificity; 2) field of educational research: basic research, applied research and evaluative research; 3) methods of educational research from a quantitative and qualitative point of view ; 4) educational research in Uruguay: its state of «embryonic» development in the field of educational sciences. The theoretical and methodological foundations of the article have been made based on the works of James H. McMillan and Sally Schumacher, Thomas D. Cook and Charles S. Reichardt and Robert E. Stake.
