Resumen:
Sumario:Teaching functions in higher education institutions have been diversified to improve education completion and prevent academic underachievement. While tutoring has so far been the main strategy, there are other teaching functions such as supervision, counselling, educational guidance, educational coaching and particularly mentoring, which at present have been little used in higher education contexts. The purpose of this article is to theoretically conceptualize these teaching functions to differentiate them and show how they can complement each other. This paper argues about the value of mentoring in the training of students, and concludes that it is necessary to incorporate it into higher education institutions because of its potential to promote academic achievement.
