Resumen:
Sumario:This study describes the competences that parents, in the 8th Region in Chile, are using in teaching their school-age children sex education and preventing sexual abuse, considering sexual abuse prevention a highly important area of comprehensive sex education. Parents and legal guardians of children in a municipal school shared their experiences. These experiences were analyzed from a systemic theory of sexuality and a gender based approach, using a qualitative case study analysis. Gender categories and the existence of prior parental experience, or lack thereof, were considered. The results show that parents develop considerable competence in their role as sex educators, incorporating progressively a comprehensive sex education in daily life, based on openness and the development of specific strategies.
