Resumen:
Sumario:Abstract. Our knowledge of crafts in Colonial Montevideo results from different sources such as reports, papers, letters and testaments. The information in them shows us a dynamic and changing society. In those times everyone used his hands to work. When an apprentice was hired by a master craftsman, he was given clothes, a place to sleep and food. When he ended his contract, he had to prove his skills by making a finished product without using documents or help. After passing the examination he became a craftsman. A reflection on this subject from the historical research helps us to understand the significance of material and educative changes in the Montevidean society.
