| Sumario: | Abstract. This article describes the main characteristics of math teaching used by 160 Latin-American teachers working with students in the last grade of elementary school in 2008. Mainly, the starting point is the analysis of more than 2500 photographs of activities proposed to evaluate children’ performance in the subject and is complemented with information gathered in some interviews made in depth by teachers. The authors study in depth didactic approaches and conceptions that guide the education provided by teachers and account for the existence of an important gap between said approaches and the needs for mathematical education in the current world. |
