Gene editing and agroecology at the crossroads. A dysfunctional and mismatched pair in the realm of promises of coexistence

Martínez Debat, Claudio - González-Ortega, Emmanuel - Piñeyro-Nelson, Alma

Currently, there are sectors related to agrobiotechnology that promote gene editing as a compatible and complementary technique to agroecology, and as a strategy to achieve food security and mitigate and adapt to climate change. Gene editing is capable of inserting, eliminating or modifying DNA or RNA nucleotides in specific genetic regions, while presenting undesirable effects. Promoters of gene editing argue that the mutations introduced do not pose any risk to the environment and/or human health, so these products should be exempt from regulation, risk assessment, traceability and labeling, which would restrict the freedom of choice of farmers and consumers. Assumptions regarding the introduced mutations ignore current evidence about unintended modifications on non-target genes, rearrangements or chromosomic ruptures and other macromutations.. While it has been put forth that this type of agrobiotechnology is compatible and complementary with the practices and principles of agroecology, we argue here that they do not share the same paradigm or objectives. In addition to problematizing the supposed compatibility between agrobiotechnology and agroecology, we hope that this work can contribute to elaborate a space where new practices, transdisciplinary, multi-agent, collaborative and co evolutionary technologies emerge, which help to solve many of the most basic and pressing issues of the moment, but also to project a science based on wellbeing, and to build a world where good relations between human beings and their social, cultural and natural environments thrive.
