Teniendo en cuenta la histórica –aunque escasamente estudiada– incidencia que tuvo Brasil en los asuntos internos de Uruguay y sobre todo en su posición internacional, se intentará responder qué tan marcada fue en este tramo esta importante tradición y cuánto condicionó a nuestro país en el marco del sistema interamericano. En ese sentido, se abordará la posición internacional de Brasil y las diferentes posturas adoptadas a partir del impacto de la proyección cubana en la región. La investigación intenta ser un aporte que permita contribuir a los estudios acerca de las relaciones entre Brasil y Uruguay en el siglo XX. Además, se propone pensar cómo impactó la Revolución cubana en nuestro país y a su vez, arrojar luz sobre la “cuestión cubana” en Brasil y su influencia en los posicionamientos internacionales de Uruguay respecto a ese desafío regional. Se podría considerar que la posición internacional del vecino país y sobre todo las presiones ejercidas a partir del derrocamiento de Goulart, limitaron los márgenes de autonomía de Uruguay, que fue gradualmente ajustándolo hacia lo que el sistema interamericano en su conjunto –y no solo Estados Unidos– promovía para aislar y derrocar al gobierno cubano. En ese sentido, el rol de la embajada uruguaya parece cobrar importancia también para discutir sobre cuál era el lugar de nuestro país en el sistema interamericano y cómo procesó sus decisiones en la delicada coyuntura internacional de comienzos de la década del sesenta.

Taking into account the historical -although scarcely studied- incidence that Brazil had on Uruguay's internal affairs and, above all, on its international position, an attempt will be made in this paper to answer how relevant this important tradition was during this period and how much it conditioned our country within the framework of the Inter-American system. In this sense, the international position of Brazil and the different positions adopted as a result of the impact of the Cuban projection in the region, will be addressed. This research attempts to be a contribution to the studies on the relations between Brazil and Uruguay in the 20th century. In addition, it is proposed to think about how the Cuban Revolution impacted our country and, at the same time, to shed light on the "Cuban question" in Brazil and its influence on Uruguay's international stances regarding that regional challenge. It could be considered that the international position of the neighboring country and especially the pressures exerted since the overthrow of Goulart, limited Uruguay's margins of autonomy, which was gradually adjusted to what the Inter-American system as a whole -and not only the United States- promoted the isolation and overthrow of the Cuban government. In this sense, the role of the Uruguayan Embassy also seems to be important to discuss the position of our country in the inter-American system and how decisions regarding the delicate international situation of the early 1960s were processed.
