Objectives. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of anxiety and depression in a group of patients with Erythematosus Systemic Lupus (SLE) belonging to two specialized health centers , and to evaluate the existence of an association with clinical, analytical and therapeutic variables of this pathology. Methods. This is an observational, cross sectional study that included 105 patients with SLE from the Systemic Autoimmune Diseases Unit of the Hospital de Clínicas (HC) and the Médica Uruguaya Corporación de Asistencia Médica (MUCAM). In order to explore the presence of anxiety and depression the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used, which was completed by the patient during the medical appointment. The SLE activity was measured with the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000. The relation between the presence of anxiety and depression and the variables associated with SLE, were finally studied through a multiple logistic regression model. Results. The mean age of the patients was 42.7 years, and 94.3% were female. The results showed that from the total of the patients included in the study, 54.3% presented anxiety and 24.8% depression. It was demonstrated that those who were under treatment with glucocorticoids (42.9%), had significantly higher probabilities of anxiety, the same relationship was not observed with depression. Conclusion. The prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients with SLE is higher compared to the general population. This fact is explained by different factors, especially those associated with the treatment and the presence of other pathologies. This demonstrates the importance of carrying out a multidisciplinary approach that includes mental health professionals.
