Solar spectral irradiance modelling and retrieval of aerosol optical depth from ground measurements

Resumen:

Accurate modelling and monitoring of solar irradiance is essential for advancing solar energy applications, atmospheric research, and broader environmental studies. This thesis addresses three complementary aspects of solar irradiance and its interaction with the atmosphere in Uruguay. First, the occurrence of over-irradiance events (OIE) is statistically characterized for the first time in the country, quantifying their frequency, duration, and intensity throughout the seasons. Second, the performance of two widely used physical clear-sky models, SMARTS (spectral) and REST2 (broadband), is assessed against high-resolution ground measurements, evaluating the influence of input atmospheric parameters and data sources. Third, a retrieval methodology for aerosol optical depth (AOD) is implemented using measurements from a collimated spectroradiometer (EKO MS-711), and validated against independent AERONET observations. The results demonstrate that OIE are a non negligible phenomenon in Uruguay, that clear-sky models can reproduce local conditions with good accuracy when provided with appropriate atmospheric inputs, and that reliable AOD retrievals can be obtained from accessible instrumentation. Overall, this work contributes new knowledge on physical solar irradiance modelling in Uruguay, providing tools and methodologies relevant for renewable energy deployment, atmospheric monitoring, and environmental applications.
