Introduction: There is extensive theory and research that highlights that the learning environment is a basic element that optimizes the learning process, both in professional and human training. Likewise, empathy is a fundamental aspect in human relationships. In medicine this quality is resignified in the doctor-patient relationship, and it contributes to making an accurate and early diagnosis, helping to optimize results. The correlation between the educational environment and empathy is a topic little studied worldwide, and in Uruguay there is no reference bibliography. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was carried out, with the objective of correlating the educational environment and the development of empathy in medical students. A survey was sent to 231 medical students during their internship. The survey included the JSPE-H test to assess empathy and the D-RECT test to assess the educational environment. Moreover, the sex, age, whether or not they were a paid intern, whether they had another paid activity and whether they were in charge of basic household activities were recorded as well. Results: The global mean of empathy was 35.76, and the educational environment was 165.64. It was evidenced that there is no significant correlation between both variables (p = 0.805). The mean of empathy in the female interns was 36.99 and that of the male interns was 32.55. The difference between the two of them was statistically significant (p = 0.003). Conclusions: No statistically significant correlation was found between educational environment and empathy. Similarly, there was no evidence of a correlation between the analyzed subdimensions of educational environment and empathy. Regarding empathy, it was shown that women have a significantly greater self-perception of it compared to men.
