In this research we investigate the way in which language (orality and writing; statement and enunciation; performativity), particularly alphabetic writing, determines the emergence of the Western subject. The forms of spirituality, in relation to the order of discourse (philosophy, rhetoric) and the history of truth (apophantic truth, truth as force) constitute the historical horizon in which Foucault addresses subjective transformation. Following the “rhumb” indicated in his latest courses (Hermeneutics of the Subject and The Government of Self and Others), we shift the focus to the way in which the subjective transformation – and the cure – would be (over)determined by the historicity of the relationship between subject, truth and language, in particular the hypothesis according to which the subject in the West is constituted by the rejection of writing and logos (Foucault). Together with the distinction between statement and enunciation, the Foucauldian methodological operator called “practical scheme” serves as the foundation for the notions of “textual self” and “extended orality.” With the aim of making visible the way in which orality and (alphabetic) writing –as material supports of language– determine the emergence of the Western subject, we carry out a discursive analysis of Plato's Phaedrus and Letter VII (Platonic subject), and On the Tranquility of the Spirit, by Seneca (Stoic subject). With the results of this research we obtain theoretical inputs to understand the links between subjective transformation, spirituality and psychoanalytic cure. This research was carried out within the framework of the activities of the research group Formación de la Clínica Psicoanalítica en en Uruguay (CSIC ID 881876), of the Facultad de Psicología (Universidad de la República- Uruguay).
