El propósito de este artículo es comprender cómo se implican los varones en las clases de preparación para el nacimiento (psicoprofilaxis obstétrica), explotando sus vivencias, motivaciones y obstáculos percibidos. Estos resultados, forman parte de los hallazgos devenidos de la investigación “Involucramiento de los varones en el proceso de psicoprofilaxis obstétrica, parto y postparto” (PAIE, 2023-2024), la cual implicó entrevistas semiestructuradas a varones uruguayos que hayan tenido su primer hijo/a en 2023 y asistieron a clases de psicoprofilaxis obstétrica en instituciones privadas o públicas. Se utilizó una metodología de corte cualitativa, a partir de entrevistas semiestructuradas. Los resultados muestran que, si bien existe un fuerte deseo de implicación, estos se enfrentan a diversas barreras que restringen el involucramiento. La inclusión, lejos de ser garantizada por el sistema de salud, suele depender del esfuerzo individual de los padres. Sin embargo, cuando las clases son accesibles, inclusivas y consideran una perspectiva de género, los varones refieren experiencias positivas que fortalecen su rol y el vínculo con sus hijos/as desde la gestación. Se concluye que la psicoprofilaxis obstétrica representa una oportunidad clave para promover paternidades corresponsables. No obstante, esto requiere revertir prácticas excluyentes, incorporar contenidos específicos para los varones y legitimar institucionalmente su presencia como parte fundamental del proceso reproductivo.

The purpose of this article is to understand how men are involved in childbirth preparation classes (obstetric psychoprophylaxis), exploiting their experiences, motivations and perceived obstacles. These results are part of the findings of the research ‘Involvement of men in the process of obstetric psychoprophylaxis, childbirth and postpartum’ (PAIE, 2023-2024), which involved semi-structured interviews with Uruguayan men who had their first child in 2023 and attended obstetric psychoprophylaxis classes in private or public institutions. A qualitative methodology was used, based on semi-structured interviews. The results show that, although there is a strong desire for involvement, they face several barriers that restrict involvement. Inclusion, far from being guaranteed by the health system, often depends on individual parental effort. However, when classes are accessible, inclusive and gender-sensitive, men report positive experiences that strengthen their role and the bond with their children from gestation. It is concluded that obstetric psychoprophylaxis represents a key opportunity to promote co-responsible fatherhood. However, this requires reversing exclusionary practices, incorporating specific content for men and institutionally legitimising their presence as a fundamental part of the reproductive process.
