This paper studies the dramaturgy of the Uruguayan writer José Pedro Bellan (1899-1930) whose plays, produced between 1911 and 1930, dialogue with a crucial moment in Uruguay's history. Modernity, which had begun to take hold in the nineteenth century, was, in those first decades of the century, the terrain of a wide dispute about its scope. A display of tensions within a continuum, between the foundational and the dependent, whose validity explains the questioning, not only of the concept of modernity itself, but of others, satellites to it, such as coloniality, for example. Our research focuses on the way in which this belligerence acquires spatial dimensions in its dramaturgy, for which we propose a reordering of the category of space applied to theater, placing the body in the first place as the producer of social space, a premise that requires considering the variables that expose bodies to greater or lesser levels of social precariousness and, At the same time, discuss the intersections that operate, in them. The relevance of our hypothesis is evaluated around three analytical axes. First, we will discuss the use of melodramatic aesthetics for the dramatization of intimacy. The reconfiguration of the modern soul, which implies the concretion of an inner world in which the impulses of desire struggle against social restrictions, acquires, in the context of the moral reform promoted at the behest of the presidencies of José Batlle and Ordoñez, a spatial relevance that allows the tension between the public and the private to be staged. We will then focus on the conflict derived from the appropriation of space that involves the differentiation between bodies representing an order that makes other bodies precarious due to their gender and age location. Finally, we observe the constraints and insurgencies in the range of spatial action of bodies precarious by their class location. In addition, as an annex to this work, the work La hinchada, premiered in 1922, unpublished to this day.
