Los disturbios causados por actividades recreativas generalmente están clasificados como una seria amenaza para las aves acuáticas migratorias y residentes que, en general, están mostrando tendencias decrecientes. Algunos deportes náuticos nuevos como el kitesurf tienen el potencial de causar disturbios sobre las aves acuáticas pero la información disponible a nivel mundial es escasa. Por lo tanto en este estudio evaluamos si existe una relación entre la actividad del kitesurf y la abundancia de aves acuáticas en la Laguna Garzón a lo largo del tiempo. Para ello ajustamos modelos lineales generalizados a partir de una base de datos de 19 conteos sistemáticos de aves, realizados dos veces al año en verano e invierno entre 2005 y 2019. Encontramos que la abundancia de aves en el sitio ha disminuido drásticamente en los últimos 15 años, conforme la afluencia de kitesurfistas ha aumentado. La disminución fue únicamente en las aves que utilizan el cuerpo de agua cómo hábitat principal y es aún más acentuada en verano, coincidiendo en espacio y tiempo con la actividad de kitesurf. Estos resultados sugieren un mpacto del kitesurf sobre las aves, aunque otros factores antrópicos pueden haber contribuido. Concluimos que la actividad de kitesurf en la laguna debería ser regulada para compatibilizar la actividad con la conservación de las aves.

Recreational disturbances are generally classified as a serious threat to migratory and resident waterfowl, which are generally showing decreasing trends. Some new watersports such as kitesurfing have the potential to cause disturbance in waterfowl, but little information is available globally. Therefore, in this study we evaluated whether there is a relationship between kitesurfing activity and the abundance of waterfowl in Laguna Garzón over time. To do this, we fit generalized linear models from a database of 19 systematic bird counts, conducted twice a year in summer and winter between 2005 and 2019. We found that the abundance of birds at the site has drastically decreased in the last 15 years as the influx of kitesurfers has increased. The decrease was only in the birds that use the water body as their main habitat and it is even more accentuated in summer, coinciding in space and time with kitesurfing activity. These results suggest an impact of kitesurfing on birds, although other anthropic factors may have contributed. We conclude that kitesurfing activity in the lagoon should be regulated to make the activity compatible with bird’s conservation.
