This research analyzes perceptions regarding scientific competence among teacher educators in the Biological Sciences program at Uruguay's Council for Teacher Education (CFE), within a context of curricular transition between Plan 2008 and Plan 2023. The main objective was to determine how teacher educators perceive scientific competence, what relevance they assign to it in initial teacher training, and from which epistemological paradigms they approach it. A convergent mixed-methods design was employed, applying questionnaires to 30 teacher educators and conducting in-depth interviews with 12 teachers from different centers and regions of the country. Quantitative analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative analysis followed a systematic coding process using Atlas.ti. Results demonstrate that the vast majority of teacher educators assign high relevance to scientific competence development, privileging dimensions such as identification of scientific issues and explanation- argumentation over heuristics-creation. An overlap of epistemological paradigms was identified, where explicit conceptions tend toward constructivist approaches, while implicit ones retain behaviorist elements. Predominant pedagogical strategies include applied practical work and project-based learning. Regarding the relationship between scientific competence and professional competence, disciplinary knowledge emerges as the main link, followed by interdisciplinary work and research. The main obstacles identified when considering a competency-based curriculum are theory-practice disconnection, institutional structural limitations, and resistance to change. Additionally, half of the teacher educators anticipate a neutral impact from the competency-based curriculum, revealing some skepticism. It is concluded that there exists a generalized consensus about the importance of scientific competence, but with heterogeneous conceptions reflecting an educational system in transition. Findings suggest the need to strengthen specific training in scientific competence, stimulate creativity in the classroom, provide adequate institutional conditions that include spaces for teacher encounters for pedagogical discussions and epistemological reflection that allow determining the pertinence and, if so, the effective appropriation of the competency- based approach in initial teacher training.
