Anthropogenic pressures on the landscape are spreading and intensifying, altering the natural characteristics of ecosystems and their associated services. Light and noise pollution are still little explored and despite having common characteristics, their combined impact has not been extensively addressed. The study of the interactive effects on biodiversity is essential to generate information to design efficient management strategies. In this work, a passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) of soundscapes was designed to estimate the response of organisms to these pressures and account for the structure of the landscape and its dynamics. The spatial variation of light and acoustic landscape at a light pollution gradient defined by “Light pollution map” (www.lightpollutionmap.info) was analyzed. Light pollution was measured with a SQM and anthropogenic noise was estimated from the Normalized Soundscape Differential Index. Also, a field experiment was designed for 6 sites exposed to different combinations of light and noise pollution in an urbanization gradient in Maldonado and Rocha. Acoustic biodiversity indices were calculated and the variations of each acoustic landscape were analyzed in relation to the effects of light and noise and their interaction. The results do not show a spatial correlation of light and noise pollution for the urbanization gradient studied. It is noteworthy that there are still some areas with dark skies, free of light pollution, nearby urbanized areas. PAM analysis shows that artificial light at night significantly alters the Acoustic Entropy Index (H) and that artificial light at night and anthropogenic noise have significant effects on the Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI). For all the indices, the interaction between the variables is statistically significant, with synergistic effects for H and antagonistic effects for ACI. Based on the results and including previous experiences developed worldwide, management recommendations are made. We suggest taking into account different levels of social and political organization at different scales; local, regional and landscape scale.
