This systematic review studies the experience of “Imágenes”, anuruguayan collective that, between 1985 and 2001, developed over 60 audiovisual projects including cinema animations and a great variety of documentary videos. The collective carried out innovative experiences in training and audiovisual content diffusion. It also helped to introduce new technologies in a country where support for national film production was rare before 1994. The first part of this thesis presents a contextual overview of the period between 1985 and 2001. It identifies transformations infilm industry at a global level, then introduces the concept of latin American audiovisual spaceand the emerging experience from the eighties of technological appropriation of video. Finally, it describes the uruguayan audiovisual industry in the selected period, where changes in the areas of production, distribution and exhibition are detected. The second part of the thesis discusses the historical development of “Imágenes” from documentary compilations. With a focus on the collective's non-advertising audiovisual output, the production model is explored and described in three stages that emerged during the field work: 1) Foundation and Consolidation (1985-1991), 2) Institutional Crisis (1992-1994) and 3) Refoundation and closure (1995-2001). The research ends with the proposition of a series of new hypotheses based on thesis findings, which problematize some variables in the field of cinema and audiovisual as a cultural industry, in the context of uruguayan audiovisual production. The most important contribution of this research is the expansion of current knowledge on audiovisual materials produced in Uruguay, based on the partial systematization of an emblematic case which is for the first time studied.
