El objetivo del presente estudio es investigar el universo de las personas childfree, que por elección no tienen hijos, para ofrecer una imagen de este fenómeno reciente y complejo a partir de la reelaboración personal de las experiencias que han vivido los entrevistados. En particular, se trata de comprender las motivaciones subyacentes a la decisión de no tener hijos y cuáles son las razones que contribuyen a tomar esta decisión. Se trata de una investigación mixta de tipo exploratorio, utilizando como instrumentos el cuestionario y la entrevista narrativa. Las conclusiones del estudio revelan que la decisión de no tener hijos en la muestra de personas childfree en Uruguay está principalmente motivada por el deseo de preservar la autonomía personal, el avance profesional y la percepción de que la paternidad no agrega un valor significativo a sus vidas. Además, los participantes expresan preocupaciones sobre el bienestar del niño en potencia y las implicaciones sociales, económicas y emocionales de la procreación. Aunque esta decisión, en su mayoría, es tomada en etapas tempranas de la vida, desafía las expectativas sociales y enfrenta estigmas asociados con la inmadurez y el egoísmo. En este sentido, la elección de no tener hijos se vincula con un fuerte sentido de autonomía y libertad personal, interpretada como una postura crítica frente a las presiones pronatalistas y un acto de empoderamiento individual.

The objective of this study is to investigate the universe of childfree individuals, who by choice do not have children, in order to provide an image of this recent and complex phenomenon based on the personal re-elaboration of the experiences lived by the interviewees. In particular, the aim is to understand the underlying motivations for the decision not to have children and the reasons that contribute to making this decision. This is a mixed-methods exploratory research, using questionnaires and narrative interviews as instruments. The conclusions of the study reveal that the decision not to have children in the sample of childfree individuals in Uruguay is primarily motivated by the desire to preserve personal autonomy, career advancement, and the perception that parenthood does not add significant value to their lives. Furthermore, the participants express concerns about the potential child's well-being and the social, economic, and emotional implications of procreation. Although this decision is mostly made at an early stage in life, it challenges social expectations and faces stigmas associated with immaturity and selfishness. In this sense, the choice not to have children is linked to a strong sense of personal autonomy and freedom, interpreted as a critical stance against pronatalist pressures and an act of individual empowerment.
