This monograph aims to critically review the transition from the diagnostic category of Hypochondriasis, as defined in the DSM-4, to the new diagnoses introduced in the DSM-5: Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) and Illness Anxiety Disorder (IAD). These disorders are characterized by excessive health-related concerns, causing significant distress and affecting individuals' daily lives. The theoretical review highlights that this change is not merely terminological but also reflects a profound transformation in how people with these disorders are understood, classified, and treated. While the DSM-5 sought to address limitations and criticisms associated with Hypochondriasis and somatoform disorders in general, many of these challenges persist, alongside new issues such as lack of precision in diagnostic criteria, the debated usefulness of distinguishing between SSD and IAD, and the risk of overdiagnosis. Furthermore, challenges related to the doctor-patient relationship, cultural factors, and stigmatization are emphasized. By synthesizing various theoretical perspectives, this paper underscores the need for a critical approach to understanding and managing these disorders, highlighting the importance of continuous professional training and empirical research.
