Este artículo reconstruye las tasas de afiliación sindical en el Uruguay entre 1929 y 2025, apelando a diversas fuentes y estimaciones, entendiendo que dicha historización contribuye a abordar los principales desafíos actuales del movimiento sindical en el país. Desde el último cuarto del siglo XX los sindicatos han atravesado globalmente un proceso de crisis que ha erosionado significativamente su poder organizativo, asociativo y político. Las tasas de afiliación sindical han experimentado un descenso sostenido desde 1970, en el marco de profundas transformaciones políticas, sociales, tecnológicas y económicas, todo lo cual es inmanente a que, trabajadores y trabajadoras experimentaran una modificación hacia formas de subjetivación crecientemente individualizadas, lo cual imprime su huella en los vínculos de solidaridad y acción colectiva que históricamente han sustentado al sindicalismo. En el caso del Uruguay, partiendo desde las primeras organizaciones sindicales en el último tercio del siglo XIX, se historizan los diversos arreglos institucionales del país durante todo el siglo XX. En medio de la primera generación de gobiernos de izquierda del Frente Amplio (2005-2020), desde 2015 comienzan a presentarse manifestaciones en la disminución de la afiliación sindical, como parte de cambios en la relación de los sindicatos con los trabajadores. Se incluyen datos específicos de afiliación, estudios de opinión sobre conflictos laborales, de acatamiento de las medidas de paros generales y confianza de la población uruguaya en los sindicatos, informados por estudios locales y globales. La indagatoria posibilita el análisis de los desafíos centrales que enfrenta el sindicalismo uruguayo a 2025, el que no escapa a determinadas condiciones globales, pero presenta desarrollos singulares. Se orienta a futuras investigaciones, identificando aspectos claves de la agenda sindical.

This article reconstructs union membership rates in Uruguay between 1929 and 2025, drawing on various sources and estimates, with the understanding that this historical approach contributes to addressing the main current challenges faced by the labor movement in the country. Since the last quarter of the 20th century, trade unions worldwide have undergone a process of crisis that has significantly eroded their organizational, associative, and political power. Union membership rates have experienced a steady decline since the 1970s, amid profound political, social, technological, and economic transformations. These changes have contributed to increasingly individualized forms of subjectivation among workers, which has left its mark on the bonds of solidarity and collective action that have historically underpinned trade unionism. In the case of Uruguay, starting from the emergence of the first trade unions in the final third of the 19th century, the article traces the country's various institutional arrangements throughout the 20th century. During the first generation of leftist Frente Amplio governments (2005–2020), signs of declining union membership began to emerge from 2015 onward, reflecting changes in the relationship between trade unions and workers. The article includes specific union membership data, opinion studies on labor conflicts, compliance with general strike actions, and public trust in unions, based on both local and global research. This inquiry enables an analysis of the central challenges facing Uruguayan trade unionism in 2025. While not immune to global conditions, the Uruguayan case displays singular developments. The article aims to guide future research by identifying key aspects of the union agenda.
