INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is presently one of the main risk factors behind the development of cardiovascular disease and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. The optimal control of blood pressure has been shown to decrease cardiovascular morbidity. The purpose of this research is to determine the effectiveness of telemedicine in the control of blood pressure in hypertensive patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: prospective and analytical-experimental research carried out at the Hospital Maciel. Participants were patients have been diagnosed with hypertension, are of legal age and are currently under pharmacological treatment. Blood pressure was measured with a sphygmomanometer associated with a smartphone and blood pressure values were automatically sent to a web database. Three surveys were conducted in order to measure and observe knowledge and information related to hypertension, adherence level of the pharmacological treatment and the satisfaction with the device used. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis were used to process every variable. RESULTS: 47 patients were included in the research and were sorted by age and classified as patients of the hypertension medical service (group 1) or other medical service (group 2). 89,5% of the patients included in the research affirmed that they were satisfied with the device used. Evidence showed that there was a 13% increased probability of the patients adhering to versus not adhering to the pharmacological treatment, with each additional year of age, regardless of which medical service the patients belonged to. There was no further evidence of association found between the others variables. CONCLUSIONS: the majority of patients were satisfied with the device used and would use it for longer periods of time in order to control their blood pressure.
